Beyond the usual urban-rural divide, a recent analysis from FGI1 has further illustrated the GDP contribution from only a few megacities.
Those cities with populations over five million, generate more than 100 USD billion and enjoy a per capita GDP above 12 000 USD (World Bank’s criterion for the high income category). The combination of those criteria brings up a selection of 16 cities. While those cities account for 30 percent of national GDP, their population share is only at 12 per cent.
